[Springfield City Library]

With just under one million volumes and a circulation of 900,000 items per year, the Springfield City Library system is the largest library serving the Western Massachusetts region. The beautiful white marble library building at the Quadrangle was completed in 1912, funded with a gift from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Eight branch libraries provide services throughout the city.

The library has strong collections in art, music and foreign languages, especially Spanish. The active children's department, employment resource center, periodical room with more than 300 titles, and busy reference department provide information and entertainment for all interests. Library cards are free to residents of Massachusetts.

The Read/Write/Now Literacy Center serves adult learners and promotes family literacy through parent/child classes.

The online Springfield Library Catalog of books and audiovisual materials may now be searched using your browser! The CARLweb site provides access to our catalog, as well as those of the other C/W MARS member libraries. Once you're connected, click on the "Libraries & Information Databases" link. Note: Don't select the "Public Libraries" link--it lists libraries in Colorado, Maryland, Florida and other parts of the country. On the next screen (labeled "below are listed all available databases") your first option will be to Select a database. Databases are listed alphabetically in a window below this option; use the directional arrow at the right of the window to scroll down to Springfield City Library, then highlight it by clicking on the name. Next go to Enter search terms; enter what you're looking for here. Next, you may Choose search type. The default is for "keyword" searching, but author searches and other types are permitted by use of the arrow to the right of the button. Note: some types of searches are not yet supported at all libraries using CARL. Finally, you may choose the number of items displayed per search screen. This LINK will take you to CARLweb.

If you prefer telnet access to our catalog, follow this LINK for more information. Note: many online service providers, such as America Online, do not support the telnet protocol. Check with your provider.
